Congressional elections are held every two years. There are elections for 1/3rd of the Senate (who sit for six years) and for all of the House of Representatives.
In England, elections must be held once every five years but can be held more often. The queen has the job of calling elections. She also has the job of presenting the government's program to parliament. That way she has to work at least once a year and some years twice.
