In the case of Senator McCain, his secret service protection was gone overnight. He was photographed the next morning driving his Toyota SUV out of a hotel garage with Senator Graham- no protection in sight. Senator Clinton did not lose SS protection when she withdrew due to her status as a former first lady.

Who protect the us president?

The sole purpose of the Secret Service agents are to protect the president. Whoever protects them is irrelevant and quite frankly not needed. With only 1 (maybe 2) shot, you need to kill the most important figure there, which is usually the president.

The inauguration on January 21, 2013 was conducted outside, and members of the secret service provided their customary protection for President Obama and his family.
