This is how a grenade works. They are very simple and easy to understand.
1) First when you pull the pin you hold the handle. This delays the pin from striking the percussion cap. (you can hold it for as long as you want and it wont go off).
2) When you let go of the lever the pin strikes the percussion cap.
3) That sets off the chemical time delay.
4) It then hits the detonator which sets off the explosives.
I'm only 12 and I know this stuff! (by the way my dad has a PHD in history and both my parents are teachers!) Anyway hope this helps!

A flashbang grenade, upon detonation, emits an extremely loud sound and a flash of light. The flash of light activates the photosensitive cells all at once for a moment of time, making vision impossible until the eye restores itself to an unstimulated state. This usually is experienced as a "pause" in vision, as though you were staring at a single image that was extremely blurry and over exposed, and lasts approximately five seconds. The extremely loud sound disturbs the fluid in the ear canals, causing temporary loss of hearing.

A hand grenade.
Friendly as a Hand Grenade was created in 1989.
The hand grenade hasn't been replaced - it's still in use worldwide, even with the most technologically advanced military forces. Rifle grenade launchers, grenade launchers, and underbarrel grenade launchers were developed not to replace the hand grenade, but as a means of filling the gap between a thrown hand grenade and a mortar.
It functioned by pulling a pin and releasing a handle. The release of the handle would allow the igniter in the grenade to work on the old fashioned explosive powder.

The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch
The term "hand grenade" implies that it was thrown by hand, instead of being propelled by other means as with a rifle grenade or an automatic grenade launcher, which incidentally were not invented in ancient China. The first grenades were hand grenades since there was no other way to propel them, yes?
