McCarthyism was a campaign, led by Senator Joseph McCarthy, against alleged communists in the US government and other institutions. Some of its effects were the loss of jobs, the fear and trauma it caused for the victims and the stifling of progress and individual expression.
McCarthyism traces its beginnings back to the First World War, when a fear of communism took hold of Americans who believed it might covertly take over their society. The Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States exacerbated this fear, paving the way for McCarthyism. McCarthy, a Wisconsin Republican, led what amounted to a witch hunt against Americans who had alleged communist ties. Beginning with federal officials, his attacks eventually centered on people in the arts, science and entertainment industries. His accusations ended careers, and led many to become ostracized when the allegations were publicly posted.
McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of disloyalty, subversion, or treason without proper regard for evidence. During the McCarthy era, thousands of Americans were accused of being Communists or communist sympathizers.
