He was a hero in WW2.. even though his back was badly hurt, he dragged a crewman to the safety of the wreckage, after his boat of 12 was hit by a Japanese destroyer. 10 survived. He fought for the country, and therefore helped contribute to the victory of WW2.
The fact that he was an Irish Catholic no doubt raised the personal esteem of some Irish and some Catholics. Other than that, he had no great effect, in part because he was very rich, so poor people would not tend to identify with him even if they were Catholic.
