As a pioneer, he was in constant conflict with the Indians who fought to discourage settlement in their hunting and fishing grounds. There were wars and massacres and atrocities on both sides. Settlers would be burned out and they would retaliate and burn the Indian villages.
As president, it was his idea to move all the Indians to lands West of the Mississippi. Those who would not agree to move would be forced to move.
he did not want them within the united states - apex

Andrew Jackson felt that the Native American tribes have more swagg than him so he wanted to remove them
He believed they were subject to laws of the US rather than being a foreign power, He offered them two choices-- either become like other American citizens, ie get a job, plant crops, obey state laws and give up their tribal customs, or vacate their tribal lands and move across the Mississippi to land that the federal government had chosen for them to live.
He thought it was necessary for the good of the United States and likely was honest in his assertions that it would ultimately benefit the Indians to get them away from constant friction with the white men. The above was written by someone else; however, I would like to add that many people believe that Andrew Jackson's true reason for the Indian Removal was to fulfill the idea of "Manifest Destiny." In the treaty of Jackson, Andrew took away lands from the Natives that allied with him and fought during the Creek and Seminole Wars, as he did those who would fight along side of him in the Battle of New Orleans. He felt that they did not use the land to the best benefit, i.e., farming or planting on plots of land for individual families instead of the plot rotation and hunting gathering communities as many of the Natives still practiced. Therefore, many think he wanted to free the land up for Western Expansion. Anyone interested in this, I would suggest looking up the book called "In Bitterness and in Tears: Andrew Jackson's Destruction of the Creeks and Seminoles by Sean Michael O'Brien. It is an easy read for those of you that are not historians and interesting enough to keep your attention.

The mission system didn't treat the Native Americans well. They were beaten, not allowed to practice their traditions, and killed. Many missions have mass graves of Native Americans.
Native Americans used rattlesnake weed to help snake bites.
