Fought courageously in the Revolution and rose to lieutenant colonel under Washington. He was wounded at Trenton. He learned law and was an aide to Thomas Jefferson. He had great diplomatic experience and he was Minister to France in 1794. He served as Governor of Virginia and also helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase. He also served in Britain and Spain and was Secretary of War and Secretary of State. As President, he presided over the Era of Good Feelings, a period of minimal sectional discord. Issued the Monroe Doctrine at the urging of John Quincy Adams. He ended his career as regent of the University of Virginia. Unfortunately, he neglected his private affairs to the extent that he had to sell his plantation and he died in poverty.
