Upon resigning, Washington told him to avoid conflicts in Europe. During Adams' presidency, the French were fighting with Britain and had asked him for help. Adams took Washington's advice and refused. This was an unpopular decision as the citizens of the United States wanted to help. Among these people were Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. This was one of the major reasons that gained dislike for Adams. In addition to this, his "social" skills were not great which led to a lot of misinterpretation and misunderstanding of his intentions. Remember, he also had to replace the great George Washington as the leader which obviously would be extremely difficult for anybody at the time.
