detente
The policy of detente, also known as the Nixon Doctrine, was created to relax tensions between the 2 superpowers, The Soviet Union and the United States. Detente is a spanish word meaning "relaxation of tensions."
Richard Nixon was president from 1969-1974, therefore beginning detente with the Soviet Union (USSR) and China. Detente lasted from 1972-1979, ending when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Detente was marked by SALT I and II (Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) and space cooperation.
President Nixons effort to ease Cold War tensions was known as the Detente.
Nixon
Detente' is actually a form of peaceful coexistence. It was pursued by all the US presidents after the death of Stalin. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev was a proponent of this policy as well.
Nixon was trying to achieve detente with USSR and China. He offered them concessions if they would persuade Hanoi to end the Vietnam war.
There were two different leaders during that time. Nikita Khruschev was leader when Nixon became president in 1969. He died in 1971 and was succeeded by Leonid Brezhnev, who was there for the rest of Nixon's term.
