People say that a first base glove can only be used on first base but that's just not true. Victor Martinez uses a first base glove as a Catcher because he used to play both positions. It only has its name because it's designed to take harder throws, as the other fielders don't take in as many high velocity balls as catchers and first basemen do. Other than that, it's still a glove. There's no rule stating that only first basemen can wear one or Martinez would have been forced to change gloves a long time ago.
That is the correct spelling of the "catcher's mitt" used in baseball.
Yes you do. Every position requires a glove. But for positions such as catcher or first base you need a certain glove specified forthat position. You can get a glove at any sports store like Dick's or Sports Authority.

A first base mitt is a glove specifically designed for first base. It has a rounded edge (like a MITTen) and is considerably larger than normal fielding gloves. Also, it has a layer of thick padding around the outside. All three of those things are designed to make it easier to cleanly scoop throws from infielders in the dirt. In addition, it has a little extra padding in the middle, although not nearly as much as around the outside. It is illegal to use it anywhere else but first base. Note: Gloves are used by for Fielders - Pitchers, Infielders, Outfielders because they have fingers like a glove. Mitts are used by Catchers and First Baseman positions because they don't have fingers, like mittens. A baseball mitt is another name for a baseball glove - a protective glove used when playing baseball.
A baseball mitt
The word "mitt" is short for "mitten" meaning that there are not individual fingers as in gloves. The plural is mitts. Mitts are used in : - baseball (catcher's mitt) - boxing training (focus mitt) - baking (oven mitt) - bathing (washing mitt) - physical therapy (heating and cooling mitts)
The common wash mitt is a hand covering used in bathing, rather than a washrag. Sponges such as loofahs are similarly used. More rarely, there are mitts used for washing dishes, or for washing pets.
