"So help me God"
President George Washington started that. At the end of his speach/oath, he said, "So help me God". He said this because he knew that leading a country is easy and he knew that he could not do not do it successfully without God's help. And ever since then, presidents always end their speach with that. :)
George Washington added the words "So help me God." to the end of the oath of office that he took when being sworn in as president. The actual wording of the oath is in Article II of the Constitution and does not contain that phrase. Washington added it on his own.
When oath of Office is taken No, it's at noon on January 20, regardless of when the oath of office is taken. Since October 15, 1933, this is the relevant portion of the Constitution: "The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January . . . of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; and the terms of their successors shall then begin."
According to the Wikipedia article, all contemporary sources fail to mention Washington as adding a religious aspect to the acceptance speech. The phrase shows up as early as 1789 in military oaths. See the article in Wikipedia on the presidential oath of office.
he addded "so god help me "
Most people who take this oath give their name after "I" at the beginning of the oath and add "so help me God" at the end.
The end of article two section one is important to inauguration day because it contains the oath that the president must take to become president. The Chief Justice of the US is most likely the person who the president states the oath to.
So help you god was never an actual part OS the oath.George Washington added it at the end of his oath and it has been tradition to do so ever since.
The 20th amendment of the US Constitution (added in 1933) states, "The terms of the President & Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January..." Now why that was the time set to begin with, I don't know.
The first President to say the words "so help me God" as the end of his Presidential oath was President Chester A. Arthur in 1881. Each President since then has used those words.
