The original Star Wars film used "proton torpedoes" launched from their X-Wing fighters. The whole concept of the battle scenes in the movie were based upon carrier warfare in the Pacific during WWII. Battle stars (taking the place of battleships) and X-wings being launched from their "aircraft carriers" (equipped with elevators and all). The proton torpedoes were the space version of the US Navy and IJN Navy's torpedoes launched from the Avenger/Devastator and Kate torpedo planes, based upon the battle of Coral Sea and Midway, both of which were fought in 1942 (WWII).
