Yes.

The war started because of disagreement over the extension of slavery, not the conduct of slavery itself.

Addendum: South Carolina was the first State to Secede from the Union and it was not all about Slavery. Slavery was alive and well and practiced in the North south of the Mason Dixon Line in Pennsylvania. South Carolina was tired of Federalism and over taxation and saw no alternative to protect itself from more and more Federal control. The Election of Lincoln, who was a Federalist, was the last straw and actually fanned the flames of Secession by the Southern States.

Note that if the Civil War had been over slavery the North would not have had slaves and certainly General Grant would not have "owned" 3 slaves his own self.

Many slaves were conscripted by the Union Army to fight in the Civil War and even Delaware had to sue for reimbursement for slaves taken by the Army. They were awarded compensation by Congress which in and of itself proves the Civil War was "not about" Slavery at all. It was but one of several issues both sides had been fighting over for years.

It is a possibility because Lincoln was the man who drafted the Emancipation Proclamation, which eventually led to the slaves gaining their freedom, but with individuals such as Martin Luther King Jr., I'm sure that slavery would eventually of been abolished. So without Lincoln, I think slavery just would of lasted longer.
