There is nothing outside the Christian gospels to say that the first century Jews really did expect the return of Elijah. However, the people of the day were very superstitious and The Bible says that Elijah was taken up into heaven without dying. for these reasons it is possible that they believed in the possibility of a return of Elijah.

Another answer:The Jews' expectations of Elijah's return arose from the prophecy of Malachi 4:5, 6 - "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse."

Luke's gospel announces the fulfillment of the prophecy in John the Baptist, the prophet who came "in the spirit and power of Elijah" (Luke 1:17).
