Phoenicians were great sailors, mariners, navigators, traders. They virtually invented the idea of "ocean shipping".
we have no definite evidence that they did.
With and expanding population and limited land to support it, they had a choice of either conquest or trade. They selected trade, and in pre-mechanical transport era, the only economical means was shipping. To engage in long distance shipment they had to invent astral navigation to be able to sail directly rather than hugging coastlines. These gave them a clear edge in establishing their trading empire. And their trade became largely 'carry trade' shipping products between other places and making a good profit on the buying and selling of the goods and slaves they transported around the Mediterranean Sea.
