The Antarctic Treaty regulates international relations with respect to Antarctica. The treaty, entering into force in 1961 and eventually signed by 47 countries, sets aside Antarctica as a scientific preserve, establishes freedom of scientific investigation and bans military activity on that continent.
The Antarctic Treaty was developed based on the global success of the International Geophysical Year.
Governments agreed that protecting part of the earth to study the health of the planet deserved a treaty to protect the planet south of 60 degrees South Latitude. The Antarctic Treaty resulted in these agreements.
