When Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California becamse part of the United States, Spanish was already being spoken there. Explorers from Spain were settling those places while explorers from England were settling in Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Some of the early Spanish explorers in Louisiana were Alonso Alvarez de Pineda, who mapped the Gulf Coast in 1519, and Hernando de Soto, who explored the Mississippi River in the 1540s. Another significant explorer was Cabeza de Vaca, who was shipwrecked near present-day Galveston, Texas, and later explored inland areas, including parts of Louisiana.
Early Spanish explores were called Conquistadors. They came to the New World in hopes of finding wealth for Spain. Conquistador is a Spanish term for someone who goes on conquests.
