The road in London called Elephant and Castle was named after a pub which previously stood there. The pub had replaced a cutlers workshop and the sign of the Cutlers Company was an Elephant and Castle. The castle is the howdah on the elephants back. The derivation is apparrently not from the contraction of the 'Infanta of Castile', much as that appeals to the romantic mind.

The name "Elephant and Castle" is believed to have originated from a coaching inn that stood at the intersection of the major roads in London, England. The inn's sign depicted the crest of the Cutlers' Company, which featured an elephant carrying a castle on its back. Over time, the area surrounding the inn became known as Elephant and Castle, and the name has persisted to this day.

Where is elephant and castle street in London England?

There isn't a street called Elephant and Castle in London but there is a small but important area by that name with an underground station named after it. The area originally got its name from a 'pub' which was situated there but now long gone. The present area is mainly a large road intersection with the convergence of different routes approaching central London from the south and southeast of London and lies about 1 mile south of the 'City of London'. Although its proper name is Elephant and Castle, Londoners abbreviate the area's name to 'The Elephant'.
