The city of Yethrib (now called Medina) was the first place where Mohammed was effecitvely able to create a Muslim society or Umma that would interact with other local tribes. Three of those tribes were Jewish tribes and another three were Polytheistic Tribes. During this period, Mohammed's actions and revelations would set the precedents for how Muslims were to interact with these groups as well as other non-Muslims in a political setting. Also, the first Mosque, the Masjid an-Nabawi is in Yethrib.

Medina was an important city for Muslims as it was the first Islamic state and it was a model for how people can live together peacefully and cooperatively despite their different faiths, colors, and races. They all enjoyed equal rights and obligations.
