They used the Santa Fe trail to get from Independence, Missouri to get to Santa Fe so they can trade. The Santa Fe Trail was a route with water and a small amount of food for the people.

William Becknell, the first American trader to reach Santa Fe, arrived in 1821 with a a pack of donkeys loaded with goods. Becknell sold the merchandise he brought for many times more than what he would have received for it in St. Louis. Becknell's route came to be known as the Santa Fe Trail. The trail left Missouri River near Independence, Missouri, and crossed the prairies to the Arkansas River. It become a very busy Route.

It was a Spanish outpost in the territory of Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico. The Spanish moved their capital there in 1610 after Apache attacks on the settlement at San Juan. The land claims of the Republic of Texas (1836-1846) included parts of New Mexico. But following the Mexican Cession (1848), the Territory of New Mexico had its capital at Santa Fe from 1850 to 1912, when statehood was granted.
