It was named by the third Governor of Spanish New Mexico when he selected the site and began construction of what he planned as his New Capital. The selected name was La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis. This was shortened in common useage to Santa Fe.
Santa Fe is Spanish for Saint Faith who was a Christian martyr who lived in Aquitaine (now in France) in the 3rd Century AD. She was executed by the order of Roman Prefect Dacian during the period of of the Roman Empire's persecution of Christians.
