It was a Spanish outpost in the territory of Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico. The Spanish moved their capital there in 1610 after Apache attacks on the settlement at San Juan.
The land claims of the Republic of Texas (1836-1846) included parts of New Mexico. But following the Mexican Cession (1848), the Territory of New Mexico had its capital at Santa Fe from 1850 to 1912, when statehood was granted.
