Paris kept on growing. At several stages in its history, the city walls had to be moved outwards. The opportunity was taken to use the space where tyhe old walls had been to make broad tree-lined streets. The word 'Boulevard' is from the same root as the English 'bulwark' - a wall. This gave Paris a series of ring roads which also served as places where people could stroll and socialise. Naturally, they were soon lined with shops.
