Israel has been the Jewish homeland for over 3000 years. The Bible describes this as Abram (later changed to Abraham) moved his family and to the land that God promised would be his home. Since then, there has been an uninterrupted Jewish presence on that land.

The Jewish faith and their recorded history (found in the old testament of The Bible) states that Israel was given to them in perpetuity by God in his covenants with Abraham (the first Jew), Isaac, Jacob and Moses. The Israelites lived in Israel during the era of the Patriarchs (220 years), during the era from Joshua until the First Destruction (850 years), during the Second Temple era (420 years) and afterwards. They remained a majority in the land for another 300 years after the Second Destruction; and a minority of Jews remained there throughout the ensuing centuries.

Israel was the site of the First Temple, built by King Solomon; the dynasty of King David; the Second Temple, built by Ezra; and the Hasmonean Dynasty. It was where the Hebrew Prophets lived, and where the Mishna (Oral Torah) was codified. Also, many of the Torah's commands apply only in Israel.

If the question refers to the area in the Middle East whose leaders proclaimed it

a sovereign nation following a UN resolution and named it Israel, the answer is

easy to find in publications that have been around for millenia and distributed

throughout most of the world. If you have access to a copy of the 'Old Testament',

you might skim the first five books. Those are translated from the Hebrew "Torah",

and describe the story of roughly the first 500 years of Jewish history. You'll read

that everything described in those books took place either near Israel, in Israel, or

on the way to Israel. All of that was 4,000 years ago, and it was never the Jews'

intention to live anywhere else.

God promised the Holy Land to Jacob (Genesis ch.28), the father of the Israelites, and his descendants. Jacob was renamed Israel by God (Genesis ch.35); and the Israelites lived in Israel during the era of the Patriarchs (220 years), during the era from Joshua until the First Destruction (850 years), during the Second Temple era (420 years) and afterwards. They remained a majority in the land for another 300 years after the Second Destruction; and a minority of Jews remained there throughout the ensuing centuries.

Israel had been the site of the First Temple, built by King Solomon; the dynasty of King David; the Second Temple, built by Ezra; and the Hasmonean Dynasty.
