I can't find the reference, but after territorial wars - probably between Peru and Colombia, the name was changed from Kingdom of Quito to Ecuador as a compromise between the names that different countries wanted. Whatever the politics, all the countries had to admit that Ecuador (meaning equator) was on the equator.
