In earlier times, mythology was used to explain what people could not explain. They wanted to know why in some places the weather changes from warm to cold, why earthquakes or other natural disasters happened, how Earth and human kind were created, how animals were created, and many other things they simply found no explanation for. Back then mythology was like today's science, and helped people understand the way the world works while also telling entertaining stories along the way.Now a days we know a flood isn't caused by some giant monster, but I think the importance of mythology is just being able to see what people believed in and compare it to what we know now. If you think about it, a lot of mythology is cleverly written and makes sense in the oddest ways. Mythology stories are also, in my opinion, very entertaining.

Everything that we call mythology today, was originally a form of religion for the people who created it. Greek mythology, Norse mythology, all the mythologies were religions, and as such, they gave people answers about where they came from, what their purpose was in life, how the world works, what it all means, what will happen to them after death, and so forth.
