I have always thought because they have characteristics in their faces that are charming and lovely when youthful, such as round faces and broad cheekbones, but when one's face becomes thinner, as it inevitably will when one ages, those same characteristics either cease to be, or contribute to sharp, angular features. They also tend to have tall, thin bodies of young adults, yet, as a general rule, do not seem to care much for exercise. So when the metabolism slows down, they tend to get quite thick. Think about it- you don't see many thin older Russian ladies.
