Afghanistan
At the start of the war, the U.S. supported the Northern Alliance, who were a group of rebels opposed to the Taliban government. Once the Taliban were overthrown, the Northern Alliance became Afghanistan's new government and so now the U.S. is backing it against Taliban rebels trying to take over again.
No. The Taliban is a Fundamentalist Islamist Group. They actually fought against the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s and the puppet Communist Government of Afghanistan. In terms of politics, they are much close to European fascists of the middle of the 20th century without the corporatist aspect of the fascists' policies.
Maybe yes and maybe no. Al-Qaeda started military resistance to the Russian occupation to Afghanistan (by support of US and other Middle Eastern countries). Taliban is fighting against US and other allies occupation of Afghanistan. In this sense, it could be cooperation between them.
My comrades and I fought endlessly against the taliban in afghanistan.
The United States and the Taliban are holding their first face-to-face meeting since the withdrawal of troops. The United States and the Taliban have been holding face-to-face talks for the first time since Saturday, following the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. A State Department spokesman said the US delegation would meet with Taliban representatives in Doha, Qatar, on Saturday and Sunday. The United States has been in contact with the Taliban since the withdrawal of US troops and took control of longtime enemy Kabul, and this is going to be the first face-to-face meeting. "We will urge the Taliban to respect the rights of all Afghans, including women and girls, and to form an inclusive government with broad support," a U.S. spokesman said Friday. The Taliban is a specific political Islamist Party/Militant Organization. The Taliban held national control in Afghanistan and ruled it according to some of the most barbaric interpretations of Shari'a Law. The Taliban supported Al-Qaeda prior to 2001, giving them safe haven. They currently their efforts on removing the Northern Alliance government of Afghanistan and leading that country again.Since these views and aims are expressly against the US interests, which are to have an Afghanistan were organizations like al-Qaeda cannot breed, the US wants to remove the Taliban.
There are about 10000 British troops fighting the Taliban in Helmand Province of Afghanistan.
The Mujaheddin in Afghanistan fought against the Soviet Union from 1979 to 1989 with the intent of overthrowing the Soviet-backed Communist Puppet Government in Afghanistan. If they had been completely successful, they would create an Islamist Fundamentalist State. This eventually did happen in 1992 with the creation of the Taliban Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
the taliban refused to turn over bin laden after sep. 11, 2001
This was triggered following the terrorist attacks against the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon on 11th September 2001. The government of George W. Bush claimed that it had firm evidence that the then Taliban government of Afghanistan had actively supported the terrorists, with funding, training and logistics support, and was turning their country into a haven for the training, instruction and equipping of Islamic terrorists. A military offensive was begun later the same year to remove the Taliban from power, allegedly to neutralise the terrorist threat that it posed to America. Whilst there was indeed some truth in the claim that the Taliban regime was engaged in supporting terrorism, it was not doing so to anything like the degree that the Bush administration alleged, and was not able to afford to fund large terror campaigns in the way Bush claimed. Many people thus felt that the assault on Aghanistan was mainly a knee-jerk revenge attack against a fundamentalist Islamic country, in revenge for the attacks on New York. The USA went to war with Afghanistan not because we hate Afghanistan. We actually went to war with the Taliban that was (and still is) inside of Afghanistan. Taliban is a political party; USA wants to stop them now before they could possibly become the rulers and completely ruin Afghanistan. The USA is in Afghanistan so we can stabilize Afghanistan.
There is no Terrorist Group which work out of Afghanistan even in 911 was planed out side Afghanistan (Pakistan and etc ) Currently Taliban save haven is in Pakistan which Pakistan ISI and MI is directly using them as paramilitary (Taliban = AQ ) against International forces for some specific goals.
