That meant that they didn't need people to spend so much time hunting animals and gathering plants to eat. Obviously with all that free time, people could start to focus on other things like science, philosophy, manufacturing, design. It also created the concept of bureaucracy, since somebody would have to be trained to deal with the stores of extra food!
