New France (Quebec) grew so slowly because you have to be French and Roman Catholic to go to New France.

Second there are not enough women in New France so the population grow slowly but King Louis the 14 found some young ladies who were orphans named Le filles de bois (daughters of the King) and sent them to New France so they could have babies.

Third New France never got as much attention as Antilles (the Caribbean islands, it is nice and hot so it is perfect to grow sugar cane) since the french King thinks sugar canes are more valuable than fur.

Last since New France is so cold in the winter, many people died in the winter so not very many people wants to go.

New France in the 1600s was mostly comprised of fur traders - mostly men. There were few married men and even fewer families. It was not until the later 1600s when the King of France recruited the Filles du Roi (the King's daughter) did the population start rising. These girls, who were often orphans, were sent to New France to marry the many single French men.

The population in New France grew slowly because

  • If you are in France and you want to go to New France you have to be French and be in Roman Catholic.
  • Plus the mild and cold winters there not very much people would want to go there.
  • Since there are not very much women there to reproduce to make children the population grew very slow.
  • Who would want to leave their home to build another house over there.
