Stalin wanted a direct assault on Germany while the united states a th U.K. wanted to take Africa and from there invade Italy and attack from Germany's "soft under belly." Italy was not as soft as it seemed. German troops did not give up much ground. in fact fighting was going on in Italy all of the way until VE-day even though Italy switched sides after the allied troops got to Rome.
