Because Canberra is a new city, it hasn't seen a lot of architectural movements yet. With most of the city's developments happening in the 60's, brutalist and constructivist buildings (which most people now see as bland or hideous) were popular. Now however modernist and post modernist buildings are being built everywhere during Canberra's latest boom.

Many buildings in Christchurch survived the earthquake due to the city's strong building codes, which require structures to be designed to withstand seismic activity. Emergency response efforts also played a crucial role in preventing further damage to buildings.

Why is the telstra tower there why is it there canberra?

I assume you mean why is telstra tower where it is and why in canberra altogether? There used to be a smaller tv arial ontop of Black Mountain however it needed to be upgraded to cope with Canberra's rapid expansion. So Telstra tower was built as a telcom. tower and as a landmark attraction too. Why in Canberra though? Because that is where it was needed.
