The major attraction to New York was the natural harbor and the access to the Hudson River. Plus, the farm land was good in the area, so the combination of the two made NY a good place to have a colony.
It probably isn't a question of Britain "gaining control" of Australia so much as it was that England just put a bunch of people on ships and set them ashore on the land down under. That made Australia a de facto British colony. The native Australians didn't complain too much, and certainly hadn't the numbers or the power to stop things, even if they did. This happened before, this colonization. What's a good example of that? Big country. Lots of room to develop. Stunning store of natural resources. Oh, yes! America!
In modern times the Anglo-Australians relations are quite close. The two share many cultural ties, including religion and language, as Australia was once a former british prison colony. The true relationship between Australia and England officially started in 1901 when six british territories federated to form the Commonwealth of Australia, a dominion in the British Empire. Since that time, the Australians have supported England in both WWI and WWII, and even today the United Kingdom is the second largest foreign investor in Australia, just as Australia is the seventh largest foreign investor in the United Kingdom.
The British government was several thousand miles away and a good 3 months sail away. Any government who is that far from a colony needs to use local government.
It is hard to imagine Australia as a viable modern nation, if it were not for the British intervention, so it must be accounted as a Good Thing. But Ye Gods, it was corrupt in the early years, with every Governor having to struggle against criminal officials who thought they were untouchable.
Australia ? You are a good example of what some of the negative effects are !
For the British, yes. For the aboriginals, not so much.
