Oceania is a geographical, very often a geopolitical region consisting of numerous lands - mostly islands in the Pacific Ocean and the vicinity.

As to why it is considered a continental region, that varies on what source you use. Teaching of geography across the world has not been standardized. As the number of continents varies from 8 if you include Oceania down to a possible 4.

I expect the reason Oceania is considered a continent by some, is just ease of use, or if you want to put it bluntly, just plain laziness.
