The ruler of the Austro-Hungarian empire was known as the Kaiser von Osterreich, or Emperor. The last one was Charles I, who gave up the title in 1918.

The rulers of Austria-Hungary began with Leopold VI who ruled from 1665-1705. Following was Joseph I (1705-1711), Charles III (1711-1740), Maria Theresa (1740-1780), Francis I (1740-1765) and Joseph II (1765-1780), Leopold VII (1790-1792), and Francis II (1792-1811).

Leader of the government is the Federel Chancellor, at the moment Werner Faymann, decided by the party winning the parliamentary elections. Above him there is still the President with mostly representative tasks and not that much power. Austria's President is Dr. Heinz Fischer.
