Denis Sassou Nguesso was the President of the Republic of Congo in 2004. He first took the position on 1979 February 8, ruling until 1992 August 31. Due to political pressures, the government allowed multi-party in 1990, and the position of President was stripped of most of its executive powers in 1991. After the civil war of 1997, Nguesso returned to power on 1997 October 25 and has ruled since. He was re-elected in elections in 2002 and 2009 to 7-year terms; these elections were boycotted by opposition.
