There is no one designer credited with the Liberian flag, which is modeled on the US flag, with some differences: there are 11 stripes to represent the 11 founding fathers of Liberia, and a single star that represents African unity.
The red and white stripes on the Liberian flag represent the courage and morality of the eleven signers of the Liberian Declaration of Independence. The African mainland is represented by the blue square. The white star is in remembrance of freed slaves.
The Liberian flag is similar to the American flag because it was started by the United States as a place to send slaves once hey were freed because at the time this was happening the US Congress said that no former slave or decendant of a slave could be a US Citizen.
It was designed by seven women, headed by Susana Louis.
It is based on and similar to the US flag with eleven red and white stripes and a single large white star on a blue field.
The eleven stripes symbolize the signatories of the Liberian Declaration of Independence, red and white symbolizing courage and moral excellence. The white star represents the freedom the ex-slaves were given, above the blue square representing the African mainland. The flag is seen on many ships around the world as Liberia offers registration under its flag. Shipping companies do this to avoid taxes and restrictions that other countries enforce. It is estimated that 1600 ships fly the Liberian flag as a flag of convenience;[citation needed] this brings in much of the country's revenue.Flag of the Liberian Customs ServiceStandard of the President of Liberia
