Currently Chief of State is President Ram Baran Yadav, and Vice President Paramananda Jha; both took office on July 23, 2008. Their term extends until the new constitution is voted as official. The last election held to do that was in July of 2008, but there has been so much wrangling between the many political factions that the deadline for the constitution to go into effect in May 2010 has passed without that happening. The President's Cabinet and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court are appointed by the president and the other justices are appointed by the chief justice. The Assembly, consisting of 601 seats, of which 26 are appointed by the cabinet.

Currently, the Prime Minister post is vacant since Madhav Kumar resigned on June 30, 2010.

Due to the number of political parties and the lack of a completed constitution, it is difficult to tell who has specific powers at this time. See the link below for recent information on this controversy and the home page with for the Constituent Assembly of Nepal.
