Who did Hercules fall in love with?
Hercules actually fell in love numerous times. The most
"romantic" love interest of Hercules was probably Princess Iole of
Ochalia. Hercules met her while on his campaign with Jason and the
Argonauts.
Hercules fell in love with her and wanted her hand in marriage.
King Eurytus (her father) held an archery competition in which the
champion would be given Iole's hand in marraige. However, King
Eurytus barred Hercules from the competition half-way through. It
was common knowledge that he had killed his last wife and children
in a mad rage which Hera had put upon him. In his anger Hercules
killed her brother, Iphitos by hurling him from the city walls.
Hercules left to continue on with his life always being in love
with Iole.
Later Hercules met and wooed Deianira. He had children with her
and was granted a kingdom through marraige with her. When he had
his kingdom he stormed Ochalia to gain revenge on Eurytus. After
the seige he took Iole for one of his concubines.
His love for her caused his wife, Deianira, to search out a love
potion with which she could gain back her husband's love. A centaur
named Nessus had once told her that his poisoned blood would be a
powerful love potion if she soaked it into a cloak and made
Hercules wear it. Not knowing it was a lie, she did so. The
poisoned cloak soaked into Hercules' skin and he died.
His dying wish was that his eldest son, Hyllus, would take care
of Iole. In this sense Hercules' love was always strongest for
Iole.
