Get an army, move it out of a settlement so it is on the game map. Right click on the general (you may have to have a family member leading the army) and there will be a small button towards the bottom that says "join crusade." Pope Urban II used his position as the head of the Catholic Church to call for a holy war against the Muslim Seljuk Turks in the Holy Land. He emphasized the spiritual benefits and promise of salvation for those who participated in the Crusade. Urban II also appealed to the nobility and offered them material rewards, such as land and wealth, to join the cause.

People joined the crusades for religious reasons because they believed in the importance of reclaiming the Holy Land (Jerusalem and its surroundings) from Muslim control. They were inspired by religious fervor, the promise of spiritual rewards, and the desire to protect sacred sites. Joining the crusade was seen as a way to defend Christianity and fulfill a religious duty.
