Contiguous means that their borders are touching the continental US. Alaska and Hawaii do not touch the mainland.

Alaska: it became a state on January 3, 1959. Although Part of the North American Land Mass, it is not considered as part of the continental U.S.

Hawaii: it became a state on January 3, 1959. A series of islands in the Pacific Ocean, it is also not considered as part of the continental U.S.

The "contiguous" states are the ones that are directly connected to the other states, often referred to as the "lower 48".

The only TWO states that are not contiguous are Alaska (north and west of Canada) and Hawaii (an island chain in the tropical Pacific Ocean).
