A national census has not been conducted since 1932 in the country which counted 791,000 people. In 1988; The United Sates Central Intelligence Agency conducted a study on the contemporary distribution of Lebanon's main religious groups (Study# 715042; B00483 12-88). The estimated population of Lebanese was 2,228,000 with religious distribution as follow:
Shia 919,000 - 41%
Sunni 595,000 - 27%
Maronite 356,000 - 16%
Other Christians 205,000 - 9%
Druze 153,000 - 7%
But the matter of religious balance is a sensitive political issue. Some say that the current distribution is evenly divided with one third christians, one third shia, one third sunni and the remaining druze.
