Samoa was once part of the U.S. The Polynesian nation joined Guam and Hawaii under the U.S. umbrella. Due to national identity, however, Samoa would split into Western Samoa and U.S. Samoa. While both nations are still heavily influenced by the U.S., Western Samoa can still call it itself independent.

It is not one island but an archipelago and it is called Hawaii.

The islands were illegally annexed by the US on June 15, 1898 and became a state August 21, 1959.

The United States Congress voted an apology to the Hawaiian people for the Illegal annexation in 103d Congress Joint Resolution 19 on Nov. 23, 1993.

It is possible that eventually the US may have to return independence to the hawaiian people as there is a growing nationalism in the Islands.
