The Spanish were used to build a new city atop conquered cities and villages in the Americas. This included cities such as Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City), Tollan-Chollollan (now Cholula), Xallapan (now Xalapa), Atotonilco, and many more.
Originally founded by the Aztec or Mexica people, it was built atop several marshy islands within the Lake Texcoco.
Years later, when Mexico was conquered and settled by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century, the main Lake was drained, leaving a large basin known as the Mexico Valley. Nowadays, most of greater Mexico City covers most of the basin.
