The territory of Louisiana at one time was explored by the French; an expedition, led by Pierre Le Moyne (as well as his brother Jean Baptiste and several other men), first mapped out the region. Later, French officials decided to place a military post in that part of the territory. Back then, in 1699-1700, the area being explored needed a name, so the French explorers named it after a distinctive red cypress tree they noticed; it was used as a boundary marker by several of the native tribes.
The name Baton Rouge means "red stick" in French-- as the story goes, the cypress tree, stripped of its bark, looked very much like a large, red stick. It is also worth noting that the native peoples in the region had an entirely different name for the tree (Istrouma, or in some sources, Itti Houma); but it was the French name that became better known. Today, Baton Rouge is the second largest city in Louisiana.
There are two. East Baton Rouge and West Baton Rouge. East Baton Rouge holds the city of Baton Rouge.
