The implication of a desert region is that not much grows there. I am not aware that Europe has a seriously desert region.

it is very lumpy and bumpy and rocky, also its high altitude, much of it is cool in the summer and very cold in the winter, obviously much of its on a slope so farming is generally on plateaus or on terraces built for farming.
Agriculture is farming. Yields is what you get out of it. So it's about how successful, how much money, farming brings in.
