In the Dien Bien Phu battle, which lasted from March 13 to May 7, 1954. The story (link) shows that the French did not so much surrender, but stopped firing on may 7, having no ammunitions left. The French had 2,300 dead, 1,730 missing, and 11,000 captured (among them 6,000 wounded). Out the 11,000 POW, only 3,000 survived. Although a defeat, this is a battle that is still an example of the bravery of French troops fighting on the ground.
