Joshua specifically enjoins the people to follow the Mosaic Covenant in Chapter 23 of Book of Joshua, most clearly in the excerpted passage below, Joshua 23:6-8 (all quotes NIV)
6“Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left.
7Do not associate with these nations that remain among you (the Canaanites); do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them.
8But you are to hold fast to the Lord
your God, as you have until now.
Moses renamed Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua. Hoshea in Hebrew means "salvation" and Joshua means "The LORD is salvation". The name change was to remind the people of Israel and Joshua for trust on the LORD God alone for protection and not on any man. Numbers 13:16 These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.)
