Later the island took the name of Puerto Rico while the capital was named San Juan.
In 1508, Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León became the island's first governor to take office
it was founded by Columbus on his first voyage in 1492. He named it La Espanola, and his son, Diego, was its first ruler/ governor
