In 1954 (during the Cold War, 9 years after World War II ended), the French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu, a location in northeastern North Vietnam next to Laos. The French had been intending to regain French Indochina, the group of colonies that France had conquered back in the 1860s during the Imperialism Era, but Vietnamese Communists and Nationalists united to fend off the invading French.
The French also decided to quit trying to regain Indochina because the French citizens started questioning whether this invasion was worth the lives and money that were costing the French.
Ho Chi Minh (1890-1969) and other Vietnamese nationalists had founded the Vietminh (Independence League), and he was leading the partiallly-divided Vietnam at the time as a nationalist Communist.
They never regained control after the Vietnam War. The French pulled out of the war in 1955-1956, leaving America to pick up the pieces.
The 1st Indochina War was to oust the French; the 2nd Indochina War was to oust the US. Both Indochina Wars involved the communists.
The effort to create a French Colony in Indochina began during the reign of Louis XVI. It had two important roots, the first was religion and the desire to bring this heathen people into the Catholic Church. The second was trade or the lust for monetary gain. After the conclusion of the Franco Chinese War of 1884-85 the French had a firm footing in the area and were well established until the Japanese invaded in 1941. The French sought to regain their colony in 1945 and met resistance in the northern areas. With the fall at Dien Bin Phu in 1954, the colonial aspirations of the French was ended in Indochina. catch me, cmon

The Vietnam War (1954-1975) resulted from the conflict of factions in the country after the French were defeated in 1954. The northern half of the country had adopted the communist ideology of China, while the southern half was controlled by dissident generals and former French interests, and established a free enterprise system. Beginning with guerrilla insurgencies, the North attempted to regain control of the South. In the Cold War period, the US supported South Vietnam while the USSR supported North Vietnam, conducting the major proxy war of the late twentieth century.
After a war, people in poverty "often" will regain there foothold on living standards by learning from their observations learned during the war. They will put "lessons learned" to use.

You need to learn you're history. There was no America during the French and Indian War. The US was still a bunch of British colonies. And Britain and its colonies GAINED land during the war.
The Chinese had control over Vietnam, but in 939, they left and an independent Vietnam was created. In 1407, the Chinese regained control of the area. In 1427, the Chinese were driven out and another Vietnam nation was established. In 1861, the French seized control of Saigon and the rest of the south by 1867. They took control of the north by 1883. In 1940-41, the Japanese advanced into and took control of Northern and Southern French Indo-China, as France had been defeated by Germany at that time. It was during this period, that the Allies defeated Japan in WWII. The British and Chinese accepted the surrender of the Japanese in Vietnam and the French re-entered the area and took over control again. Ho Chi Minh, a Vietnamese Communist, returned to Vietnam from China and headed a Revolutionary League to regain independence for Vietnam. In 1945, he proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. On December 19, 1946, Vietminh forces attacked the French in Hanoi and the Indochina War--also known as the Vietminh War--began. In 1954, the Vietminh defeated the French at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, and the nation was temporarily divided into two sections, north and south.
